5 Tips for Parents on Halloween

Each Halloween, despite little evidence, a huge number of parents worry that their children’s treats may have been tampered with or poisoned. However, accident statistics have shown that twice as many children are killed, and four times as many are injured, in pedestrian/vehicle incidents on Halloween. Please take the time to talk to your family about safety this Halloween to try to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents involving children.

Five Important Safety Tips For Parents this Halloween:

  1. Have an adult present when trick or treating and crossing streets.
  2. Walk on sidewalks or foot paths. If there are no sidewalks, then walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
  3. Follow the rules of the road at driveways and intersections. Use traffic signals and crosswalks. Cross the street at corners if at all possible. Also, watch for cars that are turning or backing up.
  4. Look left, right, and then left again before crossing the street. Continue to lookout for traffic as you cross.
  5. Make yourself visible to motorists. Bright costumes are not enough. Use a flashlight or reflective element to help increase visibility. Also, costumes should not restrict movement or vision.

Unfortunately, the accidents that occur on Halloween may result in serious physical injuries requiring medical treatment. If you or your loved one has been injured due to a negligent driver, or other preventable accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
